TORONTO (U SPORTS) – 2016 Olympians Katerine Savard from the Montreal Carabins and Yuri Kisil of UBC Thunderbirds are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending February 26, 2017.
Savard, a second-year pre-school and elementary education student from Quebec City, captured seven medals – four gold and three silver – while breaking four meet records as the Carabins finished second at the U SPORTS Swimming Championships at the University of Sherbrooke. A bronze medalist in Rio, Savard touched the wall first in the 50-metre (25.86 seconds) and 100-metre butterfly (57.98), along with the 200-metre freeestyle (1:54.91) while helping Montreal to a victory in the 4x100-metre freestyle relay (3:36.54), setting new marks in all four events. Savard also reached the podium in the 400-metre freestyle event, 4x100-metre medley and 4x200-metre freestyle relays
Swimmers Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson of the UBC Thunderbirds and Kylie Masse of the Toronto Varsity Blues, as well as Dalhousie Tigers track and field athlete Sarah Myatt were also nominated for the women’s award.
Kisil, a second-year arts major from Calgary, earned six gold medals at the national swim meet, as UBC won its second U SPORTS Swimming championship in three years. The Rio Olympian was the fastest in the 50-metre (21.62 seconds), 100-metre (46.94) and 200-metre freestyle (1:44.10) races, and swam a leg in UBC’s 4x100-metre freestyle (3:12.92), 4x200-metre freestyle (3:32.36) and 4x200-metre relay (7:08.50) victories. Kisil set or helped achieve records in four of the events, including a new Canadian mark in 4x200-metre freestyle relay, to take home Men’s Swimmer of the Year honours.
Laval Rouge et Or swimmer Pascal-Hugo Caron-Cantin, Moncton Aigles Bleus track and field athlete Alain Doucet and Queen’s Gaels hockey goaltender Kevin Bailie were the other male nominees.
