ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS athletes of the week (#5): Regina’s Waldenberger, Laurier’s Brudiu honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Emma Waldenberger, a hockey player from the University of Regina, and Stephan Brudiu, a soccer player from Wilfrid Laurier University, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 4, 2015.

Waldenberger, a second-year nursing student from Moose Jaw, Sask., kicked off her Canada West season in style as she exploded for seven points, including five goals, to lead the Cougars to a pair of home wins against powerhouse Calgary. The 6-foot forward opened the scheduled with two goals and a helper in a 4-3 double overtime on Friday night, and then added a hat-trick and another assist in a 7-0 rout on Saturday, including the game-winner. In Game 2 of the weekend series, the talented sophomore scored shorthanded, at even strength and on the power play.

Acadia soccer player Meghan Earle, Concordia rugby player Alex Tessier and York field hockey player Michelle Per were also nominated for the women's award.

Brudiu, a second-year health sciences student from Kitchener, Ont., allowed only one goal on 21 shots on net to help the Golden Hawks (4-3-4) secure a pair of crucial points in the OUA West division playoff race. The 6-foot-2 keeper was stellar last Thursday as he made a career-high 14 saves in a 1-1 draw against reigning CIS champion York, which was ranked third nationally going into the contest. On Sunday against archrival Western, Brudiu turned aside all six shots he faced for his fourth clean sheet of the campaign in a scoreless tie.

Soccer players Randy Ribeiro of StFX, Simon-Pierre Côté-Kougnima of UQAM and Chris Rushworth of Lethbridge were the other male nominees.
