Philippe Halley

Philippe Halley

Halley, a third-year recreation and sports studies student from Quebec City, earned tournament-MVP honours at the CIS championship in Halifax after he helped guide the fifth-seeded Varsity Reds to the sixth University Cup title in school history, including five in the past decade. The 5-foot-10 forward accomplished a rare feat by registering a hat-trick in each of the V-Reds' first two games, a 5-1 quarter-final win over Western and a 4-0 domination of Saint Mary's in the semis, before wrapping his dream weekend by assisting on the game-winning goal in a 3-1 defeat of StFX in Sunday's final played in front of 9,873 at the Scotiabank Centre. Halley, who played for Gatineau and Victoriaville in the QMJHL, was voted UNB's player of the game in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Basketball players Dele Ogundokun of McGill, Connor Wood of Carleton and Thomas Cooper of Calgary were the other male nominees.
