OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Jasmin Dhanda and Navid Mashinchi, both from the University of British Columbia, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 14, 2014.
Dhanda, a second-year kinesiology student from Surrey, B.C., scored four goals in two contests against the University of Northern British Columbia, including both game-winners, as the Thunderbirds evened their record to 2-2 in league play thanks to 5-0 and 3-0 home wins. The 5-8 forward, who was named the Canada West rookie of the year last season, scored UBC’s first and fifth markers in Saturday’s series opener before netting the first two goals in Sunday’s rematch.
Cape Breton soccer player Karolyne Blain, McGill soccer player Alexandra Tinfow and McMaster rugby player Cindy Nelles were also nominated for the women’s award.
Mashinchi, a fifth-year business student from Port Moody, B.C., was in on six on the T-Birds’ eight goals as the reigning two-time national champions improved to 4-0 in conference action thanks to 5-1 and 3-0 victories over visiting UNBC. The 5-foot-9 midfielder opened the two-game set on Saturday with a three-assist effort before adding two goals and one helper, including the game-winning marker, in Sunday’s shutout win.
St. Francis Xavier cross-country runner Lee Wesselius, UQTR cross-country runner Stephan St-Martin and Guelph soccer player Justin Springer were the other male nominees.
