OTTAWA (CIS) – Swimmers Savannah King and Coleman Allen, both from the University of British Columbia, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 23, 2014.
King, a fifth-year kinesiology student from Vernon, B.C., was named Canada West female swimmer of the year for the fourth straight season following the conference championships held in Lethbridge, Alta. The two-time Olympian finished the meet with four gold medals and one silver, including wins in the 200, 400 and 800-metre freestyle events, and led the UBC women to their sixth consecutive team title. In five career appearances at the championships, King won both the 400 and 800 free every season and racked up 24 podium finishes, including 20 wins.
Moncton hockey player Marie-Pier Arsenault, Sherbrooke volleyball player Kim Robitaille and Toronto swimmer Paige Schultz were also nominated for the women’s award.
Allen, a fourth-year kinesiology student from Spokane, Wash., merited his third straight male-MVP honour at the meet and helped the Thunderbirds become the first men’s team in history to reach the 1,000-point plateau at the conference championships. The senior standout was nothing short of phenomenal in Lethbridge collecting six gold medals and one silver, including Canada West records in the 100 butterfly, 200 fly and 100 backstroke. He was also part of the record-setting 4x200 freestyle relay.
UNB hockey player Adrian Robertson, Laval volleyball player Jean-Philippe Desjardins and Ryerson basketball player Jordon Gauthier were the other male nominees.
