Canadian university tennis championship: York wins back to back women’s titles

MONTREAL (CIS) – The York Lions women won their second straight Canadian university tennis championship on Saturday, defeating the Montreal Carabins 4-3 at Uniprix Stadium.

Eugenie Lim Ah Tock, Heather Hills, Isabella Baston and Julia Khalilova all picked up singles victories for the Lions, who defended their 2015 championship. The duos of Clémentine Michallon and Laurianne Roussel, along with Marianne Jodoin and Catherine Drolet replied for the Carabins, securing the doubles point early before Jodoin and Michallon each registered singles wins.

The victory was redemption for York, who lost the OUA championship to Montreal on home court last October.

In the bronze medal match, the Alberta Pandas knocked off the McGill Martlets 5-2, to claim their seventh consecutive podium finish at the national tournament. Third-year Kristina Sanjevic won both her matches in singles and doubles to finish 4-0, en route to tournament MVP honours.

The event concludes Sunday with the men’s medal matches, with the Toronto Varsity Blues battling the Alberta Golden Bears for gold, while the Carabins clash with rival McGill for bronze. Action gets underway at 10 a.m. ET.
